In Mediterranean countries like Greece, physical activity has always been an integral part of daily life and was naturally incorporated into people’s way of life. Walking, gardening, housework, manual agricultural labour and traditional dances central to cultural events have all been ways in which physical activity was integrated into the day-to-day lives of people in the Mediterranean region.

Daily physical activity plays a key role in the Greek Mediterranean way of life, and this is also reflected in the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid. The new Mediterranean Diet Pyramid developed by the International Mediterranean Diet Organization in 2010 promotes regular physical activity as a key to maintaining good health.

Regular exercise has been recognized as one of the most effective means of boosting both our physical and our mental health. Among other things, physical activity helps strengthen the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems and enhances our overall fitness level. Additionally, exercise is beneficial for sleep quality and our mental health, helping to reduce stress.

Though the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid does not specify types or duration of exercise, it encourages engaging in some physical activity on a daily basis. There are of course general recommendations on physical activity issued by a number of international bodies, such as the World Health Organization (WHO). The Mediterranean Diet Pyramid highlights the fact that any activity we engage in during the day that involves physical activity can significantly benefit our health.

Physical activity does not have to be in an organized form. Engaging in casual activities that require movement, such as repairs or cleaning the home or garden, getting from place to place, taking the stairs instead of using the lift, carrying a load, etc., are considered to be just as important. Being more physically active and less sedentary is certainly beneficial to everyone.

What’s more, the Mediterranean way of life encourages physical activity as part of social and family interaction and can include a stroll with friends, taking part in team sports and dancing. Outdoor activities, which can easily invite the participation of friends, are more enjoyable and also serve to strengthen community ties.

In summary, aside from its nutritional aspects, the Mediterranean diet also emphasizes other facets of one’s lifestyle, including daily physical activity. The combination of regular exercise and adopting healthier dietary habits has countless benefits for our health.
