Elle doit son nom \u00e0 Zakynthos, fils de Dardanos, roi de Phrygie, et son histoire se perd dans la nuit des temps. Au fil des si\u00e8cles, elle a connu de nombreux conqu\u00e9rants, mais ce sont les V\u00e9nitiens qui ont laiss\u00e9 l\u2019empreinte la plus marquante, tant sur l\u2019architecture que sur la vie culturelle de l\u2019\u00eele.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Zakynthos poss\u00e8de un riche h\u00e9ritage culturel, o\u00f9 la musique occupe une place de choix \u2013 les kantades y sont particuli\u00e8rement mises \u00e0 l\u2019honneur, et c\u2019est sur l\u2019\u00eele qu\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 fond\u00e9e la premi\u00e8re philharmonie en 1816. La po\u00e9sie et le th\u00e9\u00e2tre y ont \u00e9galement laiss\u00e9 de nombreuses \u0153uvres exemplaires. Vous aurez un bel aper\u00e7u de ce patrimoine en visitant le Mus\u00e9e Solomos et des personnalit\u00e9s illustres de Zakynthos, ainsi que des sites embl\u00e9matiques tels que la place Agiou Markou et l\u2019\u00e9glise Agiou Dionysiou. L\u2019\u00eele est mondialement c\u00e9l\u00e8bre pour la plage du \u00ab Naufrage \u00bb, son littoral embl\u00e9matique, mais aussi pour sa richesse naturelle. Chaque ann\u00e9e, la tortue Caretta Caretta vient pondre ses \u0153ufs dans la baie de Laganas, l\u2019une des plus vastes de M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e. Cette r\u00e9gion est prot\u00e9g\u00e9e par le parc national marin de Zakynthos et, avec les c\u00f4tes occidentales et nord-est de l\u2019\u00eele, est int\u00e9gr\u00e9e au r\u00e9seau Natura 2000.    <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Gastronomie<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>La cuisine de Zakynthos est profond\u00e9ment influenc\u00e9e par les V\u00e9nitiens, ce qui explique pourquoi de nombreux plats, comme les polpettes (de grosses boulettes de viande) en sauce rouge, portent des noms italiens. Les produits phares de l\u2019\u00eele sont l\u2019huile d\u2019olive, l\u2019ail et la tomate. De nombreuses sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9s locales, telles que la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre sartsa (b\u0153uf ou veau mijot\u00e9 dans une sauce \u00e0 la tomate et \u00e0 l\u2019ail), les avga skordostoubi (\u0153ufs \u00e0 l\u2019ail) et les melitzanes skordostoubi (aubergines \u00e0 l\u2019ail), sont sublim\u00e9es par cette sauce riche et savoureuse, typique de Zakynthos, \u00e0 base de tomate, d\u2019huile d\u2019olive et d\u2019ail. Le lapin occupe une place d\u2019honneur \u00e0 la table de Zakynthos, et vous le trouverez sous diff\u00e9rentes formes, farci, en stifado (rago\u00fbt) et autres variantes. En ce qui concerne les desserts, les mandolata (nougat \u00e0 base de meringue, de sucre, de coriandre, d\u2019amandes et de pistaches) occupent une place centrale et sont r\u00e9put\u00e9es comme les meilleures de Gr\u00e8ce.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Parmi les fromages, le ladotyri se distingue : c\u2019est un fromage \u00e9pic\u00e9 et ferme, fabriqu\u00e9 \u00e0 partir de lait de ch\u00e8vre et de brebis. Zakynthos poss\u00e8de une grande tradition vinicole, la viticulture jouant un r\u00f4le cl\u00e9 depuis la p\u00e9riode v\u00e9nitienne. Il existe aujourd\u2019hui de nombreuses vari\u00e9t\u00e9s indig\u00e8nes, et plusieurs d\u2019entre elles figurent parmi les meilleures du pays.
