Kreikassa villin\u00e4 kasvanutta viinik\u00f6ynn\u00f6st\u00e4 alettiin viljell\u00e4 ja jalostaa n\u00e4ht\u00e4v\u00e4sti yli 6&nbsp;000 vuotta sitten. Kreikka on my\u00f6s viinin jumala Dionysuksen kotimaa, ja h\u00e4nelle omistetuista juhlista kehittyiv\u00e4t my\u00f6hemmin niin antiikin teatteri kuin my\u00f6s symposium eli pidot. T\u00e4m\u00e4n j\u00e4lkeen ne tuli j\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4 varjoon viideksi p\u00e4iv\u00e4ksi. Kun viiniryp\u00e4leet olivat kuivuneet yhteens\u00e4 15 p\u00e4iv\u00e4\u00e4, kuudentena varjossaolop\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4 ne tuli siirt\u00e4\u00e4 saviastiaan ja puristaa niist\u00e4 mehut. Toinen viittaus rusinoihin ja niiden k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n viininvalmistuksessa on Hippokrateen teoksessa <em>Taudeista<\/em> (500\u2013400-luvulla eKr.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rusinoiden ja uskonnollisten rituaalien v\u00e4linen yhteys k\u00e4y ilmi Delosista l\u00f6ydetyst\u00e4 kaiverruksesta, jossa mainitaan, ett\u00e4 rusinat olivat osa saaren Poseidon-jumalan kunniaksi j\u00e4rjestettyjen juhlien tarjoiluja. Er\u00e4s toinen kaiverrettu l\u00e4hde nime\u00e4\u00e4 tummat rusinat yhdeksi Kyyros Suurelle ja h\u00e4nen hovilleen ja armeijalleen l\u00e4hetetyist\u00e4 elintarvikkeista. Verginan Akropolikselta on l\u00f6ydetty 200\u2013100-vuosisadalta eKr. per\u00e4isin olevia hiiltyneit\u00e4 rusinoita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kuten nykyp\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4kin, rusinoita arvostettiin antiikin aikoina niiden korkean ravitsemusarvon ja V\u00e4limeren l\u00e4mpim\u00e4n auringon suoman pitk\u00e4n s\u00e4ilyvyyden vuoksi. Toki tuolloin niihin ei lis\u00e4tty mit\u00e4\u00e4n modernissa elintarviketeollisuudessa k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 olevia s\u00e4il\u00f6nt\u00e4aineita. Rusinat ovat todenn\u00e4k\u00f6isesti olleet herkkua antiikin makunystyr\u00f6ille, sill\u00e4 rusinoiden, viikunoitten ja hunajan lis\u00e4ksi tuohon aikaan oli olemassa vain hyvin v\u00e4h\u00e4n makeita ruokia ja ruoka-aineita, ja niit\u00e4 arvostettiin niiden korkean kalori- ja ravintoarvon vuoksi \u2013 ja siksi, ett\u00e4 niill\u00e4 pystyi tyydytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n makeahampaan
