Saaren nimi tarkoittaa Traakian kuuta. Se on johdettu sanasta saos (joka tarkoitti muinaiskreikassa kuuta) ja viittaa saaren kuuluisaan vuoreen. Samothraki tunnetaan maailmanlaajuisesti kuuluisasta Samothraken Nike -patsaasta, joka l\u00f6ydettiin saarelta vuonna 1863. T\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 se on esill\u00e4 Pariisin Louvressa.
