Studies have shown that specific dietary models could protect against chronic diseases, delay age-related cognitive decline and improve general well-being. <strong>Amongst dietary models promoting \u201chealthy ageing\u201d and longevity<\/strong>, <strong>one of the most effective is the one based on the principles of the traditional Mediterranean diet<\/strong>. The term \u201chealthy ageing\u201d refers to the process of ageing in a way that preserves physical, mental and social well-being, allowing older people to remain active and independent for as long as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mediterranean diet and the generally healthy lifestyle it promotes, which also includes regular physical activity, helps to prevent and delay the appearance of diseases and supports healthy ageing. <strong>The ageing process is directly related to cell deterioration and increased inflammation in the body<\/strong>. <strong>Foods<\/strong> with a high content of antioxidants, polyphenols and dietary fibre, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts\/seeds <strong>found in plentiful supply in traditional Greek cooking<\/strong>, <strong>can protect cells from damage caused by free radicals<\/strong> and reduce inflammation. So consuming these healthy foods, rich in especially beneficial nutrients and always as part of a sound diet, helps to prolong body health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the dietary habits that focus on eating healthy fats, such as <strong>monounsaturated fats<\/strong> found in olive oil and <strong>omega-3 fats<\/strong> found mainly in oily fish like herring, sardines, bass, etc., have been shown to be particularly beneficial for cardiovascular health. These fats help to <strong>reduce blood cholesterol levels, blood pressure and the risk of heart disease, which often lead to premature death<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mediterranean diet is not just a key to improving physical health, but also <strong>helps to boost one&#8217;s mood and mental well-being<\/strong>. For example, research has found that people with depression who adopted the Mediterranean diet showed a marked improvement in mood. The antioxidants and healthy fats contained in abundance by the basic foods that comprise the Greek Mediterranean diet help to reduce stress, stem the age-related decline of cognitive function and reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly, <strong>the Greek Mediterranean diet, with its wealth of healthy foods, is a powerful tool in ensuring healthy ageing<\/strong>. Scientific data suggest that adopting this dietary model reduces the risk for chronic disease and improves <strong>quality of life<\/strong>. The Mediterranean diet, together with physical activity and mental well-being, is the key to a long and healthy life. By incorporating the Mediterranean diet into our life, we can take advantage of its multiple benefits and enjoy a quality life well into the
