Athens has developed into a cultural destination, featuring fine hospitality, wonderful food, and one-of-a-kind streets to stroll through. From its archaeological sites to its museums and performing arts, there\u2019s something for everyone here. For example, this summer the Athens Epidaurus Festival had its 70th anniversary, with impressive performances in open-air theatres such as the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus, the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus and Peiraios 260. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


Personally, I adore the Plaka neighbourhood. For me, it\u2019s far more than a tourist attraction, as it is home to the Spiros Evangelatos Amphitheatre, where I came of age. Walking through its winding alleyways, you\u2019ll encounter more than tourists: you\u2019ll be treated to a living piece of Athens\u2019 history. It\u2019s like crossing over into the past. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And of course, there\u2019s always the opportunity to sit and enjoy a meze, drink a beer or grab a bite in the numerous \u201chidden\u201d basement taverns that keep the local culinary tradition alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


But Plaka is just the start. From Dionysiou Areopagitou Street to Anafiotika, the journey is full of memories and aromas of old Athens. 

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area of Epidaurus is also worth mentioning; it attracts tourists who organise their holidays to coincide with major cultural events. A major percentage-roughly 25%- of visitors are foreigners, a fact that demonstrates the area’s international appeal. Epidaurus is so much more than its theatre and the festival. The area also has incredible natural beauty. Visitors can stroll through Nafplio, Tolo and Old Epidaurus, enjoying the beaches and local natural beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Epidaurus also brings together culture and local development. There are lodgings available throughout the area, while tourists can also enjoy local products such as marmalades, oil and soap at agrotourism exhibitions. And of course, the local taverns offer authentic dining experiences at reasonable prices, with their fresh fish and traditional cuisine. In other words, visitors to Epidaurus are in for much more than your typical tourist experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
